Idris Elba's New Series Lands On Netflix This Week - Here's Everything You Need To Know

A new Idris Elba comedy series hits Netflix on Friday, although it's a far cry from Luther.

Turn Up Charlie sees the actor take on the leading role of Charlie, a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a nanny to his famous friend's wild-child daughter.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of its release.

What's the plot?

Charlie is trying to continue his once-successful career as a DJ, although is struggling to find his break in the industry again. When he's approached by a famous friend with an exciting proposition, the character believes his made it, although can't contain his shock to realise they actually want him to look after their daughter.

And it looks like Charlie accepts the role of nanny to Gabby, as he's seen taking the young girl along with him to gigs in his quest to kick-start his career again.

As the short Netflix synopsis puts it best: "A down-and-out DJ plots to rebuild his music career while he working as a nanny for his famous best friend's wild 11-year-old daughter."

While the new character is nothing like DCI John Luther, it's actually a little closer to home for Idris, who is a DJ himself. The actor has performed on the decks at Glastonbury, Creamfields and Snowbombing - and was even a resident DJ at Hi Ibiza last summer.

And is there a trailer?

The trailer was released at the end of last month, along with a whole bunch of first look images to give fans a taste of what's to come. You can watch the two minute-long preview here:

Who is the team behind it?

Idris co-created Turn Up Charlie with Gary Reich, with the pair co-producing alongside Tristram Shapeero, of French and Saunders and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame, so this new series sounds promising.

How many episodes are there?

Turn Up Charlie is an eight episode-long series, with each instalment lasting for half an hour, meaning you could easily binge-watch your way through the show in one sitting on Friday.

What about a second season?

There's no word on whether Netflix will renew Elba's latest series for a second season, although it's likely fans will find out soon. The streaming giant often orders new seasons before the first has even finished, although it entirely depends on the show's popularity upon release.
