Great British Bake Off Winners Were Not Happy With The Pitta Challenge

During last nights Great British Bake Off final, the contestants left the tent for the first time in history to complete their technical challenge.

Rahul, Kim-Joy and Ruby were challenged to make pitta breads and three dips on an open fire outside of the iconic tent.

However, viewers and former winners of the baking show weren't happy with the challenge and questioned what the point of it was.

The finalists all seemed to struggle with the challenge and they all managed to burn the pittas with Rahul calling the challenge 'an utter disgrace'.

Series three winner John Whaite made his feelings known on the pitta bread scandal as he questioned how the fire pits were a part of typical home baking.

He wrote: "Britain's best home baker? HOME BAKER. Gizza min love while I stoke up my outdoor fire hole...[sic]"

John's tweet stirred something among past Bake Off winners as Edd Kimber, who won the first ever series, replied.

Edd replied: "Thank You!! Gets a bit silly with all these challenges. I mean, a biscuit chandelier."

Fans also shared their disappointment at the challenge and some declared that making pitta breads on an open fire 'is not baking'.

One upset fan wrote: "When is baking not baking? Because tbh pitta bread and dips on an open fire doesn't look much like baking to me."

Another added: "Hmm making them *cook* - not really bake - pitta and dips on an outside basic fire for #gbbo final may be entertaining but is it fair?"

One user commented how none of this would've happened if Mary Berry was around, they wrote: "I'm pretty sure I'm going to have nightmares about fires and pitta bread - as much as I'm getting used to Channel 4, none of that would have ever happened with Mary, Mel and Sue watching over things."

During the show, you could tell that the already nervous bakers weren't very comfortable with the challenge.

Rahul was extremely confused and said: "I never really cooked on a fire before. Why would I do that? People will think I've gone mad."

He also admitted that he had no idea what he was doing, he added: "Just disgraceful again. Just utter disgrace."

Ruby also felt confused but seemed to warm to the idea of al fresco cooking: "I have no idea what I'm doing. Bear Grylls eat your heart out."

If you haven't already guessed, the pitta bread challenge was created by Paul Hollywood as he wanted to try something new.

He said: "We've never done anything like this before. This technique of baking bread on a hot stone has been around for thousands of years. I think it's a great challenge for the final.

"I expect they have never come across anything like this before. They will get a bit hot under the collar as that temperature is extreme."
