Fans of Netflix's horror The Haunting of Hill House might have uncovered a hidden plot twist in the series.

The show is based on Shirley Jackson's classic 1959 novel of the same name, and is described as a slow-building horror.

Mike Flanagan's adaptation follows five siblings who grew up in the house, and they are forced to return to the mansion and relive their nightmares.

Over 10 episodes, the programme reveals the haunting that took place at the Crain's childhood home, and the impact that it's had on them as adults.

Yet, a Tumblr user pointed out a twist in the series, which has had viewers both gripped and petrified.

The five siblings in the series are not just the main characters - they also represent the five stages of grief.

The oldest, Stephen, believes the paranormal experiences of his siblings can be put down to mental illness, which fans suggesting he represents 'denial'.

Short-tempered Shirley is thought to represent 'anger' because of the frustration she feels at what happened to her family in the 1990s.

The character of Theo, who has a supernatural ability to see and feel things, can be linked to 'bargaining' - particularly when she asks for Hill House to explain why her sister Nell died.

Luke represents depression because of the despair he feels when his twin sister Nell dies. Of all the siblings, he takes her death the hardest and his life spirals out of control.

According to the theory, Nell embodies the notion of acceptance. A year after her husband dies after an incident with the terrifying 'Bent Neck Lady', she realises her fate lies with Hill House no matter what.

She returns to the house and accepts she may be reunited with her mother Olivia, who died by suicide.

Netflix has reportedly already 'talked' about the possibility of bringing The Haunting of Hill House back for a second series if the first was successful.

Actor Michiel Huisman, who plays Steven Crain, has spoken about the possibility of a second series and horror fans will not be disappointed.

Speaking to JOE, Michiel said: "Well, you know what. Very early on, when we were still shooting this show, we had conversations about what a second season could look like and I think that one of the crazy things about Mike (Flanagan) is that he is an infinite well of ideas and stories.

"I don't think he ever sleeps! There are possibilities - if the show is a hit - to create a second season and still be in this world of Hill House."
