The official Peaky Blinders Twitter account shared the news fans have been waiting for this morning: filming for series five will finish tomorrow meaning the season is one step closer to hitting our screens.

But while we all sit tight waiting for the Shelby gang to grace our screens once more, here's everything you need to know about season five before it lands.

When will season five air?

Filming has been taking place since September 2018 and although the BBC hasn't released much information on a release date, we do know the series will be returning this year.

In a trailer for their best picks of 2019, the BBC included a few glimpses of Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby in the Birmingham-based gangster drama.

What channel will it be on?

The beloved gangster drama will also have a new home for series five as it was announced that it would be moving from BBC Two to BBC One following its growth in popularity.

Explaining the decision behind the swap of channels, Director of BBC Content Charlotte Moore said: "Peaky Blinders is world class drama at the top of its game and the time has arrived for it to move to the UK's biggest channel.

"Steven Knight's epic storytelling is authentic and utterly compelling and I want to give it the chance to be enjoyed by an even broader audience on BBC One.

"We couldn't have asked for a better response to series four and the impact it had with young audiences. This move will also give BBC Two more creative headroom to experiment with new drama."

Who's directing the fifth season?

The fifth series will be directed by Anthony Byrne (In Darkness, Ripper Street) and will be produced by Annie Harrison-Baxter (Marcella, In the Flesh).

Who's going to be returning for season five?

Despite moving channels, fans will be happy to know that some of their favourite cast members from previous series will be returning.

Leading the way is Cillian Murphy, who will be reprising his role as Tommy Shelby.

Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson), Michael Gray (Finn Cole), Ada Thorne (Sophie Rundle) and Polly Gray (Helen McCrory) will also be returning to your TV screens.

However, while it is extremely unlikely we will be welcoming Tom Hardy back (his character Alfie Solomons was shot dead by Tommy in the series four finale) we haven't given up all hope on Alfie returning. When creator Steven Knight was asked whether Alfie was really dead in a previous interview, Knight said 'pass' (which isn't a yes or a no!).

Some of the new faces joining the Shelbys include Hunger Games star Sam Claflin and former Hollyoaks actor Emmett J Scanlan.

It has also been reported that Aidan Gillen will be returning as Aberama Gold.

A close ally of Tommy's, despite their differences, gypsy Aberama and his son, boxer Bonnie (played by Jack Rowan) will be making a return.

Any details on the plot?

Series four ended on a high for Tommy and co. as we saw them get rid of the Changretta family before Tommy had a slight career change when he became the Labour MP for Birmingham South.

However, we have a slight feeling that he won't be using his newfound power positively.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Arthur Shelby actor Paul Anderson revealed: "One thing's for sure - Arthur ain't gonna be no politician! And I very much doubt Tommy will be, really.

"I think [becoming a Member of Parliament], that's just Tommy expanding his empire - his ambition is to have power in a lot of areas and that's just another extension of his power."

Series five will catch up with the Shelby's after the 1929 stock market crash, and the official synopsis reads: "Series five of Steven Knight's crime family saga finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929. Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere.

"When Tommy Shelby MP (Cillian Murphy) is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family's future but that of the entire nation."

The official Peaky Blinders Instagram account posted an image of a revolver and a blood-spattered clapper-board, along with the caption: "First day back on set for #PeakyBlinders Series 5. You're sure of a big surprise."

Let's hope we don't have to wait too long to see what that surprise actually is.
