'Derry Girls' Series 2 Comes To Emotional End As New Series Is Revealed

Derry Girls fans were left with happy tears during Tuesday night's finale when James Maguire decided to stay in Ireland after declaring "I am a Derry girl!"

In the heartwarming scenes, the Londoner was reunited with his mum, who wanted to take him back to England, before he decided to stay in Derry at the very last minute - prompting the girls to ditch their plants to watch Bill Clinton's presidential speech.

While the series - which is set during The Troubles in the 1990s - came to joyous end, fans had even more to celebrate as it's revealed the Channel 4 comedy will come back for a third series next year.

As the finale episode began, the girls eagerly awaited the historic speech made by the then President of The United States Bill Clinton, during his trip to Derry - a moment which came as peace talks began, following the ceasefire.

But while all the excitement took place, James discovered his mum had come back to Ireland, despite abandoning her son to live with cousin Michelle during series one.

The girls were stunned when James revealed his mum wanted to take him back to London so he could help run her self-adhesive sticker company.

But after cousin Michelle made a powerful speech declaring being in Derry is a 'state of mind', he was convinced to stay in Ireland.

The emotional scenes were even more heartwarming in the news that a third series of the comedy is on its way.

Announcing the new series, writer Lisa McGee said: "I love writing this show and I'm so thrilled to be able to continue the Derry Girls story, thank you Channel 4, Erin and the eejits live to fight another day!"

Channel 4′s director of programmes, Ian Katz, added: "At a time of great uncertainty about the future of the country thank god we have one unequivocally good piece of news to look forward to: the Derry Girls will be back to make our lives a bit brighter and more fun."
