When we watch films about sex workers, they often portray women falling victim of heinous and gruesome crimes at the hands of their customers, but Netflix's psychological thriller, Cam, is bringing something entirely different to the table.

The film follows Alice (Madeline Brewer), a badass cam girl who goes by the name of Lola, and she absolutely loves her job. She's a far cry from the down-trodden women forced to go into sex work through desperation, often portrayed in these types of films, and she's far from a victim...

Instead of Alice falling victim to a gruesome murder, the film takes a much more Black Mirror-esque turn when her cam account is hacked by a girl who looks exactly like her.

Her dreams of making it onto one of the top 10 porn sites in the world comes to an abrupt halt while she's completely locked out of her account.

While Alice loses out on all the money she should be making with all the influential, wealthy men tuning into her shows, she becomes obsessed with trying to make her real identity seen.

Potentially the most interesting part of Cam is that it's written by former sex worker, Isa Mazzei, and focuses on agency rather than exploitation.

Instead of exploring the perils of the men who follow 'Lola' into her real life, it looks into how the police react to her stolen identity and the ever-growing dangers around internet hacking.

If you're happy enough watching a film that's ending will most definitely leave you still squirming and you're a fan of Black Mirror, then Cam is certainly worth a watch.

The terrifying parts of the film choose not to focus on the people who've stolen the account, but more on the lengths Alice is willing to go to get it back, in a world where it can feel like your worth is dependent the number of Instagram likes you receive.

If nothing else, it's worth watching just for the epic Madeline Brewer alone.
