The BBC has finally dropped the full trailer for the latest series of Luther and it looks incredible.

Idris Elba returns as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther and it looks as though the new series is going to be full of drama.

The 100 second clip shows Luther back again and - accompanied by a new partner - on the trail of another deranged killer on a murderous spree across London...

Flashes show past characters, including East End villain George Cornelius, return for the fifth series, but the main take away from the clip is the teased shock return of murderer and love interest Alice Morgan, who Luther - and fans - believed to be dead at the end of the last series.

he latest series will be just four episodes long so fans will have to make the most out of the new series when the episodes appear on their screens.

The official synopsis reads: "When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther played by Idris Elba is once more called to immerse himself in the deepest depths of human depravity.

"While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday played by Wunmi Mosaku are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption.

"But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil, a reluctant Luther is forced to confront the unburied demons of his own recent past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect and who to sacrifice.

"Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him - and change John Luther forever."

Elba hinted to RadioTimes that Ruth Wilson's character Alice could return to the latest series. She was last seen in the series three finale which aired four years ago and was thought to be killed off-screen when she was drowned by Megan, who is played by Laura Haddock.

Although as viewers never saw the murder, we were never entirely sure whether Megan had gone through with it.

Wunmi Mosaku, who appeared in Channel 4's Kiri, is joining the cast as new recruit DS Catherine Halliday, however this unfortunately means it is unlikely previous sidekick DS Emma Lane (played by Rose Leslie) will return.

Hermione Norris (Cold Feet) will play psychiatrist Dr Vivien Lake who is on hand to help Luther get to the bottom of a wave of brutal murders.
