When you think of the royal family you probably tend to think of plenty of the other old-timey traditions associated with our great nation; music included. It's hard to imagine Her Majesty rocking out to 'Royals' by Lorde or Prince Charles loving a bit of 'Purple Rain' by Prince, but actually, like any other normal people, the royal family get to listen to whatever music they like and they do enjoy a few modern bangers.
So without further ado, let's explore what we know about the royal family's eclectic music tastes!
1. Ellie Goulding - Prince William and Princess Kate.
She's one of the biggest forces in modern pop music, so why wouldn't the royals love Ellie too? Of course, Ellie got a huge royal seal of approval when she was asked to play at Will and Kate's wedding. In fact, her cover of 'Your Song' by Elton John was their first dance as a couple. Speaking to The Daily Mail Ellie revealed a little more about the incredible opportunity: "William and Kate were very appreciative. They are an awesome couple and told me how much they enjoyed it. My band and I stayed at the reception all night, and it's something I'll treasure forever."
2. Beyoncé - Princess Eugenie.
So it turns out that the Queen Of England's granddaughter is a huge fan of Queen Bey music. How fitting. We know that Eugenie is a huge fan of Beyoncé because she was spotted in the front row of the audience at one of Bey's gigs in London in 2013. In fact, awkwardly, Beyoncé picked her out to perform to for one song leaving Eugenie looking pretty flustered.
3. Gary Barlow - Queen Elizabeth II.
Okay, so this one is a bit speculative but we reckon it's pretty solid. She revealed that the song that Gary and Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote for her Diamond Jubilee back in 2012 was one of her all-time favourites (along with some hymns and the legendary Fred Astaire.) Presumably she wouldn't have mentioned it if she thought Gary was crap though, right?
4. Linkin Park - Prince William.
Yeah, we know what you're thinking, 'how does anyone like Linkin Park?' But it seems Prince William is a big fan. While he was speaking to students at a high school in Yorkshire, the heir to the throne revealed that he loves the head-banging band: "I really like Coldplay, Linkin Park." Unexpected to say the least.
5. Bodyrockers - Prince William and Princess Kate.
Again this one is quite sourcey so it might be a load of hogwash, but we're including in the list because it's just so hilarious that we desperately want it to be real. If you're old enough to remember all the way back to 2007 (which, by the way is 10 years ago now! 10 years! Where did the time go?!) then you'll know that Will and Kate's relationship wasn't all plain sailing. Back in May 2007, the couple split, but after dancing together to 'I Like The Way You Move' by Bodyrockers at an afterparty the princes held after the concert they hosted to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of their mum's death, Will and Kate rekindled their love. Bodyrockers are the reason Will and Kate are a thing so be grateful!
6. Kanye West and P Diddy- Prince Harry.
Speaking of that afterparty, you know who the main act they invited along was? Kanye West. This was before his ego swelled to the size of a large blimp, of course, but it's still pretty cool. Here's a photo of Harry looking seriously chuffed to be hanging out with Kanye and P Diddy to prove his love for them:
7. Skream - Prince Harry.
Another unlikely one here to surprise you, it seems Prince Harry is a big dubstep fans. Yeah, we didn't see that coming either, the Royal family and dubstep just don't really go together do they? But apparently they do as Harry is a big fan of Skream. That's according to Skream's Magnetic Man bandmate Artwork who told the Sun that Harry once recognised his friend: "We got invited up to Buckingham Palace to watch Goldie's band in action. While we were there, we met Prince Harry. He was well excited when he was introduced to Skream - he put his hand out and said, 'Hello Skream, nice one!' Harry obviously knew who he was before he met him."
8. Leonard Cohen - Prince Charles.
Prince Charles might seem like one of the most uptight royals, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know incredible music when he hears it. Back in 2006 royal correspondents were shocked when Charles revealed his admiration for the 'Hallelujah' singer Leonard Cohen: "He's remarkable. The orchestration is fantastic and the words, the lyrics and everything. He is a remarkable man and he has this incredibly laid-back, gravelly voice." In the same interview, a young Prince William hinted that Charles is into jazz, as he asked Charles if that's what Leonard was famous for, perhaps assuming that was the case because he knew his dad was into jazz?
9. Justin Bieber - Prince William.
Yep, Biebs really does have fans in high places. We were surprised by most of the musicians on this list, but this was truly shocking. Speaking to the Daily Mail William revealed that he quite liked 'Never Say Never' but it couldn't compare to his all-time favourite, The Beatles: "I enjoyed the Justin Bieber song, Never say Never, but it's not my favorite, that would have to be 'Yesterday' by the Beatles."
What do you think? Are you surprised by some of the artists on this list or did you know all along that William was a closet Belieber?
