Ted Bundy's ex-girlfriend revealed the one thing the notorious serial killer was "ashamed of": his parentage.
There has been a huge amount of interest in the serial killer as of late, owing to Netflix's The Ted Bundy Tapes which featured never-heard-before audio interviews with the criminal, as well as the soon to be released film, Shockingly Evil, Extremely Wicked and Vile starring Zac Efron.
Bundy's ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer once penned a whole book about the man who confessed to the killing of 30 women, titled The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy in 1981.

And in a recently-unearthed extract, Elizabeth gave an insight into their six-year relationship, during which Bundy was leading a double life as a heinous serial killer.
According to Elizabeth, Bundy was "ashamed of" and hated talking about his parentage.
"As sophisticated as Ted was, he had one hang up that surprised me," she wrote in her book. "Not long after we started spending time together, he came over one night and said he had something very important to tell me, something that might change my opinion of him."

She continued: "Shaking with nervousness, he told me that he was illegitimate.
"His mother gave birth to him in a home for unwed mothers in the East, he said, and they moved to Tacoma to live with relatives when he was very small.
"Then she married Johnnie Bundy and had four more children. Johnnie Bundy had adopted him but Ted knew nothing about it until he was a teenager. It had come as a terrible shock.

"A cousin had been had been teasing him about it, and Ted refused to believe it.
"The cousin had taken Ted up to the attic and showed him proof: his birth certificate."
Elizabeth said that Bundy was furious at his mother for not telling him his real parentage, and cried as he recalled it all to her.

She shared: "It bothers him that his family was middle class. He was ambitious and wanted to be better than that.
"He liked the fact that my father was a successful dentist. But to me, at least, his family's status didn't seem to be a major problem; Ted was very fond of them, and success would be all the more satisfying to him if he made it on his own."
It was Elizabeth who went to police after a series of coincidences made her believe that Bundy was behind a string of murders and kidnappings in the US in the 1970s.
But authorities didn't have enough evidence to convict him and Elizabeth stayed with him until he finally confessed to the crimes.

Authorities believe he kidnapped, raped and murdered more than 30 women and young girls. He was executed by electric chair on 24th January 1989.
Elizabeth will be portrayed by Lily Collins in Shockingly Evil, Extremely Wicked and Vile when it is released on the Sky Cinema channel on 3rd May in the UK.
