Sunday night's Super Bowl saw Adam Levine and Maroon 5 take to the stage for the eagerly anticipated halftime show, but viewers aren't happy about the 'double standards.'

As the performance went on, Levine gradually undressed, leaving himself completely topless with his nipples on full display.

Viewers were left fuming he singer was allowed to go topless, after Janet Jackson was forced to apologise when she accidentally revealed a nipple thanks to a wardrobe malfunction, during her performance with Justin Timberlake in 2004.

One viewer fumed on Twitter: "Just a friendly reminder that Janet Jackson got blacklisted for doing what Adam Levine just did."

Another quite rightly questioned: "Why is it okay to see Adam Levine's boobs and not Janet Jackson's? Asking for a friend."

Janet's performance broke records all over the place and led to her being the most searched for term for 2004 and 2005 as well as the most watched, recorded and replayed moment in TiVo history.

However, it also led to Janet being banned from performing at the NFL for life, which begs the question of why on earth is it acceptable for Adam Levine to expose his nipples without consequence?

The incident, which was dubbed 'a new low for primetime television', and prompted The Federal Communications Commission to take CBS and Viacom to the Supreme Court to fine them $550,000.

Somehow we don't think they'll be following up on Adam Levine's performance...
