You actor Penn Badgley had the best response to reaching one million followers on Instagram.

The Gossip Girl alum found his fan base surging following the successes of Netflix original series You, in which he played bookstore manager Joe Goldberg who is an obsessive stalker willing to kill.

So naturally, Penn had a few things to say about his rise in Instagram followers because of his latest creepy character, and he still isn't entertaining it.

Sharing a video to his one million fans of him pretending to hold back tears, Penn said : "Good morning from Manila. I wake up to find - I never thought I'd see the day - but I wake up to find I have a million followers.

"I don't know what to say, because all it took was for me to start murdering people. Y'all get the f*ck out of here!"

The caption read: "Woke up like this #nofilter thx 4 followinggggggg [sic]," and his bedhead hair 'do proves that he was telling the truth.

Penn has already been pretty vocal about his fan base's thirst for his character - the actor called out viewers for romanticising Joe in a string of tweets earlier this month.

The actor reminded fans one by one that Joe is far from desirable as he replied to their commentary on the series.

One fan wrote: "Kidnap me pls," to which Penn simply replied: "No thx."

And another fan asked: "Said this already but @PennBadgley is breaking my heart once again as Joe. What is it about him?" The actor quickly responded: "A: He is a murderer."

Somebody else shared: "I'm telling u it's ur face that does it. Ur gorgeous. I can see past that crazy sh*t lol."

And Penn still wasn't having it. "But you're supposed to see past my face TO the crazy sh*t! It's the other way! The other wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyhhyyyyggg," he wrote.

The actor will be reprising his role as creepy Joe, as Netflix has confirmed that You would be getting a second season. Here's hoping Penn will be able to make his followers see his character's true colours by then.
