Thanks to David Attenborough's Blue Planet, we've all learned to appreciate the incredible creatures that live in our oceans just that little bit more.

The series showed just how amazing our sea creatures are, and although we didn't need any more evidence, this incredible footage of a pod of dolphins protecting a female humpback whale and her baby from five male humpbacks just proves it.

In the video, we see the mother, which has been named Spirit, and her male calf, Sunny, suddenly surrounded by a group of male humpbacks while swimming off the coast of Flinders Bay, on the southwest coast of Western Australia...

Spirit and Sunny find themselves in danger as the male humpbacks begin competing to mate with Spirit, which could see the mother and son getting separated, which could be potentially fatal for Sunny.

Just when things looked pretty bleak for the pair, 10 to 15 bottlenose dolphins came to the aid of a very tired Spirit and her baby - who had been chased by the male whales for more than half an hour.

Incredibly, the whole thing was caught on film by amazed members of Whale Watch WA, showing the dolphins gathering round an exhausted Spirit.

One dolphin even showed a rare sign of aggression as it flashed its teeth toward the male humpbacks.

Spirit was forced to swim close to the Whale Watch WA vessel in order to try and keep Sunny safe as the dolphins came to her aid.

One of the males then became a bit chivalrous and acted as a sort-of escort to the mum and baby as the rest of the smaller males were sent away.

While the video shows what amazing creates whales and dolphins are, it also shows the incredible lengths that a mother will go to protect her baby.

Whale Watch WA has called the protection efforts of the dolphins 'truly remarkable' and a 'true once in a lifetime experience'.

Nature is amazing.
