What's purple, sweet, smells like perfume and has the nation divided? Parma Violets, of course.

First manufactured in 1946 by Derbyshire-based confectioners Swizzels, the distinctive tasting lilac sweets are a British staple with a whopping 100 million rolls of the sweets made every year.

It makes sense, then, that the retro treats now have a national day of their very own.

Yep, you heard right. Parma Violets Day takes place on 28th June and kicking things off is 26-year-old Abi Clarke, who was recently crowned the biggest Parma Violets fan in the world, which is quite the title.

In the lead up to the big day, Swizzels embarked on a nationwide hunt for Parma Violets fanatics with a competition that drew in thousands of applicants. But after proving her dedication to the childhood favourites, Clarke came out on top.

Speaking about the competition Jeremy Dee, managing director of Swizzels, said: "Our search for Parma Violets' biggest fan earlier this year confirmed what we already knew, that there are so many passionate Parma Violets fans out there and we wanted to give them a day to celebrate with us each year.

"Abi is a very worthy winner, her love and dedication to our retro sweet shines through - she really is a super fan."

Just how dedicated is Clarke? Well, not only does she own pretty much everything Parma Violets branded - from sweets to air fresheners and candles to cycle shirts - but she's even made the sentiment permanent with a leg tattoo of the purple sweets. Now that's what you call a fan.

Needless to say, Clarke was pretty chuffed with her win, explaining "Over the past few years my love for all things Parma Violets has really rocketed, my house is filled with everything Parma Violets - even when I go out cycling, I wear a Parma Violets cycle shirt. I got my Parma Violets tattoo earlier in the year and I love it."

Fellow Parma Violets diehards would do well to keep an eye out for the big day. Swizzels will be giving out Parma Violets-themed prizes across its social media pages every hour throughout 28th June.
