Customers Buy Out Doughnut Shop Every Day So Owner Can Spend Time With Sick Wife

Customers keep buying all the doughnuts in a California bakery every single morning, so its owner can spend time with his sick wife.

John Chhan and his wife Stella ran the Donut City shop in Seal Beach for 28 years together - up until she suffered a brain aneurysm in September.

Donut City's regulars instantly noticed something was amiss one morning when Stella wasn't there, with John revealing that his wife had been taken ill.

He explained to his customers that he wanted to spend as much time with her as possible, but with bills to pay and doughnuts to sell, he couldn't.

The shop would usually open at 4.30am before closing at 2pm, and he'd then head off to spend time with his wife in a rehabilitation centre.

John also asked that no Crowdfunding pages were set up for them on their behalf.

So customers thought of another way to spread the sweetness, and show just how much the Chhan family mean to them.

"Days went by and I just couldn't get it out of my head," customer Dawn Caviola told the Orange County Register. "So I thought, if enough people would buy a dozen doughnuts every morning, he could close early and go be with his wife."

Dawn posted about her idea on the neighbourhood message board, with hordes of customers instantly getting on-board.

Queues of patrons quickly started forming outside Donut City every morning for sweet breakfast treats.

And at 7.30am most mornings, the shop is now completely sold out.

"We're done for today. Sold out about a half-hour ago," John told The Washington Post at 8am on Monday when he sold around 50 dozen sweet treats.

"I so appreciate it. I just can't say enough thank you and thank you."

Stella is still weak, but is gradually regaining strength in her limbs.

"She's getting better and better," John added.
