A Great Dane has given birth to a ginormous litter of 19 pups after undergoing a C-section.

Kingman Animal Hospital in Kingman, Arizona, posted snaps on Facebook of new mother Cleo with her 19 spotty babies snuggled up to her as she recovered from the surgery.

It was all hands on deck for the vets as Dr. Erika Angone led the surgery along with a team of seven technicians plus family that came to assist with delivery.

And the animal hospital says that the delivery went without a hitch and the new mum is recovering well from the surgery.

"The staff of KAH (11 of us) successfully delivered 19 Great Dane puppies this morning by C Section! All live and healthy! Mom doing great!" they wrote on Facebook.

Kingman Animal Hospital then added "Thank you all for the kind words and congrats to the momma dog and our hard working staff that came in for this emergency."

The puppies are an assortment of fur colours including dark brown, spotted and yellow, and mum Cleo has a glossy black coat.

While 19 puppies sounds like a lot, it isn't quite a Guinness World Record. Instead, the award for largest litter ever recorded went to a Neapolitan mastiff that gave birth to a total of 24 puppies. However, they did not all survive.

A litter of puppies is usually around eight, so it is still pretty good going from Cleo!

Commenters congratulated the Great Dane on her huge litter, praising the hospital staff too.

"Wow, owners you will not sleep for a month!! Congratulations," exclaimed one person.

And another Facebook user enthused: "Congratulations to the mom, owner and KAH. Good job. That is definitely puppy overload. They are beautiful."

"Oh my gosh. Momma deserves a big steak!" suggested somebody else. Here, here!
